Melbourne, May 30.

In connection with the petitions against Home Rule, Mr Deakin states that some controversy took place over sending them through the Governor-General to the Imperial authorities. The petitions were sent to the Governor-General without reference to his Ministers, and Rord Northcote declined to send them Home. Mr Deakin threw out a faint at the time that the petitions might be sent through him and that be would hand them to the GovernorGeneral but the hint was not taken.
