Football.

FOROTAWHAO (8) v. HUIMAI (5).

Those who journeyed to the racecourse on Saturday afternoon last were certainly rewarded with witnessing a close contest, with a sprinkling of good football. Hard knocks were freely given and taken, though there was an entire absence of dirty play, which other offenders may [take note of. The men from Oroua Bridge showed themselves to be in good form, but a few new players in their ranks effected many infringements which told against the effort's of their more learned members. The referee could do nothing else but repeatedly penalise them, and these players should benefit as a result. They have the makings of a good team, but being the first match we are not going to attempt to individualise them. Mr Simmonds made a courteous captain. Huia did npt have the services of Davey Tatana, and his brother captained the team. Their side fumbled the ball considerably, and what with rash passes lost much ground at times. They were behind in points until within a few minutes of time, and nothing but sheer doggedness won the day. If they had a good place kick in the team they may have registered a larger score, for they had many free kicks awarded them within good range. Huia should be the hardest team to beat for the championship, as they should play much above Saturday’s form as the season wears on.

The win was made up of two tries (one converted) to one try (converted). Mr Sutherland refereed, and Messrs Tatana (Huia) and Manawaroa (Huimai) acted as touch judges.

SANDON (17) v. AWAHOU (0).

Awahou did not get their best team away to Sandou on Saturday last, and the figures therefore come as no surprise. As it was, those that did play seemed sorely out of condition, and could not expect to do themselves justice against superiority such as Sandon. There can be only one thing certain, that Awahou displayed lamentable weak form, and if they expect to credit Foxton with the 1906 senior championship, they better rid themselves of an inclination to develop “swelled head ” and roll up to practices more oftener than was recorded last week. Sandon’s score consisted of five tries, one of which was converted. Dug Scott, Ricardson, and the McNae Brothers did good work for the winners, while W. Lambeth stood out as the pick of Awahou. In the forwards, J. and G. Coley, F. Spiers, and J. Joe grafted well. Mr Croucher referred.

NOTES. — — Old Jimmy Desmond and Fob Newth played solid games on Saturday last, and are by no means done with yet. W. Lambert is spoken of as being a good man on his form last Saturday.

Peter Reihana made a successfull debut as a three-quarter for Oroua Bridge on Saturday last, while Pete Larkin proved a solid grafter in the forwards. Much interest is being centered in Mr Ted Coley’s Cup for junior competition. It is expected the competition matches will commence on Wednesday week. The management Committee meet on Thursday night to consider all matters in connection with same, reinstatement of players, etc. Father Molloy has signiefid. his willingness to act as referee at Foxton Union matches held at Sandon.

Awahou Juniors and Albions have a scratch contest at the racecourse to-morrow afternoon.

The Albion Club acknowledge receipt of one guinea donation from Mr F. W. Frankland, and a football from Mr S. Hickson. The Awahou Club wish to acknowledge the receipt of a donation from Mr A. Shadbolt. The Foxton Sub-Union acknowledge receipt of is donation from Mr H. Bailey, vicepresident at Sandon.
