Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MAY 12, 1906. THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

We may say that the figures recorded at yesterday’s Mayoral Election came as a surprise to us, in that the victory of the successful candidate was made decisive by the number of votes he polled. There can be no doubt that the burgesses returned their favourite elect. Figures speak for themselves, for Simpson polled more than the other two candidates put together. How this all came about we are at a loss to determine, for we honestly believed Gray to have recorded a close fight, and victory with either. However, we are pleased to record that, so far as the candidates themselves are concerned, there was no cause for eminity during the contest, and apparently the utmost good feeling existed right until the calling of the poll last evening. As to our new Mayor, we trust he may merit the confidence replaced in him by sound works. We are venturing on a trying year, so far as Borough affairs are concerned. Our finance is in a crippled state, and great care will have to be exercised. It is openly said the new Mayor and Councillors will not get on amicably, but for the good of the Borough, we trust all will pull together for the common good. Actions speak loud, and may Mr Simpson be credited with formulating measures which will prove to our advancement, and by so doing repay burgesses for yesterday’s vote of confidence in him as Mayor. By returning him, burgesses elected a candidate who made no secret of the fact that his motto was ‘ ‘ Progression,” and while agreeing that we are certainly in need of many improvements, still we contend that any improvements we intend to make will have to be carried out with tact and much financial consideration.
