Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 10, 1906. A FINAL REMINDER.
Ip we are to take last night’s meeting as a guide, the attendance certainly does not indicate that polling will be very heavy at the Mayoral election to-morrow. Still it is our duty to once again remind burgesses that a poll is to be taken, and in the interests of the Borough every vote should be recorded. All three candidateseem to have a popular following, and the figures should be close. Mr Simpson lias previously held office, and burgesses have something to go on when considering his qualifications, Mr Baker has represented us on Council and School Committee to some effect, while Mr Gray (who preferred not to sneak publicly) has a similar qualification. No enmity has existed between the three candidate-- throughout the contest, an 1 we trust that good feeling wi! 1 continue when Mr Alf. Fraser, Returning Officer, calls the result to-morrow night.

Much fun was caused over part of M r Baker’s speech last evening. Ths sneaker said he would be in favour of forming a committee to consider planting of willows at.the river bank. This raised the question of whether these willows should be set horizontal or perpendicular, and after much debate, Air Raker preferred to leave the matter to the said committee.

In this week’s “ Press ” is a photographic copy of the Awahou Football Club, of last year. In the critique, apnoats the startling announcement that “ J. The New Zealand Rugby Union has d -elded, with regard to its credit balance of over £12,000, “ that T6OOO be invested on fixed den iat and the balance be loaned to allihated unions offering good security at 2£ per cent,” The amount put on fixml d -v-git is to b ■ held in view of the probable visit of i i E iglFh team in 1900. and he necessity of gauraatceuig Mi the exp -uses. “Just now the M’aorilaacier dominates everything,” says the Bulletin. “ His blessed Stead came over and cleared out the bookmaker; his footballers have broken the world’s record in the way of a successful tour; he is borrowing faster than anyone else in Australasia; and now Arnst has scooped our biggest cycling prize. In fact, the oarth is just now, the •Maorilanders.’’ Then the crumb of comfort, “ Bar one thing—be can’t play cricket worth a cuss.” ft is a singular fact that most fish'™am are unable to swim. Rather an amusing incident occurred at last night’s meeting, of ratepayers. It was ovor a question put to Mr Simpson, re the transferring of moneys ac o ruing from one reserve being spent on another. Mr Simpson’s main conF irion was that it was right, wlwn M>Hennessy chimed in with " 1 would never rob Fetor to pay Paul.” Thor noon. Air Simpson said tnat there mnv Vi -i chance of the b'inkrup r reserve r - paying tenfold, whereupon Mr Hennessy was equal to the humourous occasion by replying “ Paul never paid.” Loud laughter.
