THE NEW FOXTON FOOTr BALI UNION. A meeting of the delegates of the different football clubs was held at Laing’s Hotel on Saturday night, and so great was f he pressure of business that an adjournment had to be made at tbe licensed closing hour to the Hbrau) Office to conclude, midnight arriving before the chairman was finally thanked for conducting the meeting. Those present were Messrs H. Austin (Chairman), J. Jillett and F. Robinson (Awahou), Syd. Wright and J. Desmond (Porotawho), Manawaroa Darkies, J. Dunn and the Captain (Oroua Bridge), P. O'Dea, J. Cameron, ,A. Davis (Sandon), and the secretary, E. G. Sutherland. The Oroua Bridge delegates intimated that they intended to play in the Foxton sphere, provided they got home and home matches with other clubs. The secretary spoke strongly against holding any matches at Oroua Bridge, mainly from a financial point of view. However, after much debate, ft was agreed to play the Awahou and Sandon matches in the fint round at Oroua Bridge, at the same time receiving a guarantee from the Oroua Bridge Club of • £* 23 gatelat each match. .' Mr O’Dea (Sandon) explained much in connection with the reason whp Jthey decided to join the Foxton section. The travelling arrangements were much better for the Club than to be attached to the Rangitikei Club. ; His Club (Sandon) intended entering both a junior and senior team for: Foxton. Sandon Club .members waited upon Mr Purnell with reference to tram arrangements ; and he (Mr O’Dea) felt they were, so satisfactory they would suit all concerned. All the tram authorities wanted was. a guarantee of £3 teams either to or from Sandon or Foxton and back. This practically meant ao at 3s each. ■On tbe score ol gate money, j the Sandon delegates present j thought the Union would be | thoroughly satisfied with the! 1 figures registered at Sandon. j “There was a feeling extant that j all the Porotawhao Club’s matches j be played at Foxton, and this being agreed to, the Porotawhao, Sandon, and Oroua Bridge Clubs were admitted to the Foxton SubUnion.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers took place as follows; — Patron — Mr John Stevens, ; President —G. A. Simpson, Esq. ; Vice-Presidents— Messrs J. A. Bailee and H. Davis (Sandon), H. G. Hammond and W. V. P. Pearce (Oroua Bridge), 0. Robinson and 0. Austin (Awahou), J. R. MacDonald and W. Walden (Porotawhao). Management Committee Messrs Cameron (Sandon), S. Wright (Porotawhao), F. Robinson (Awahou), A. Shadbolt (Oroua Bridge). Mr H. Austin was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Committee ; and Mr E. G. Sutherland secretary. The latter was also elected to the offices of treasurer, complimentary being mide to the late treasurer (P. W. Jenks) who is leaving the district. Mr P. O’Dea was elected auditor. The Selection Committee is to composed of Messrs Sutherland, Rakena, and J. A'Court. THE NEW DISTRICT AREA. In addition to the district area in vogue last year, to bring in the Sandon Club, the following route was mapped out: —From Oroua Bridge in a direct line to Mount Stewart, to Sandon cemetery, and from thence to Rangitikei river. THE REFEREE QUESTION. Much dissussioutbok place over this matter, and it was eventually decided that for the present our referees join Manawatu Referees’ Association. The trouble about forming a local Referees' Association was the difficulty of members of the whistle brigade meeting together. It was decided to avoid, as far as possible, appointing referees to any match, who had any interest whatever in the different Clubs. . The following names were handed in as willing to act: — Messrs J. Frew and E. Sutherland (Foxton), W. Broughton (Eevin), E. Morse (Sandon), C. Bowater (Rongotea), G. Nicholson. (Bulls). The name of Mr Gordon, Foxton’s new school teacher, may be added to the list. The Executive were of opinion that referees should pay their own expenses to matches this present season, on account of the Executive's financial state.
JUNIOR MATCHES. |t was practically decided to.run
a Wednesday junior championship on the understanding that two teams compete from Foxton. The Awahou delegates stated they could raise a second team, whilst prominent youths have the forma-* tion of another team in hand Sandon have entered and it behoves the other junior teams to meet at once and forward their entrance t- the secretary. It was decided that with three teams comp jng, four rounds be played. The Union also decided to meet the different teams engaged, in every possible way regarding the re-instatement as juniors of those players who played Foxton senior last season.
SENIOR FIXTURES. It was decided that three rounds be played for Austin Banner, the first round being arranged as follows May 12. —Porotawhao v. Oroua Bridge at Foxton, Mr Bowater referee. Sandon v. Awahou, at Sandon ; Mr Nicholson referee. Map i9.—-Oroua Bridge v. Sandon, at Oroua Bridge; Mr Frew referee. Porotawhao v. Awahou, at Foxton ; Mr Bowater referee. May 26.—Sandon v. Porotawhao, at Foxton ; Mr Sutherland referee. Awahou v. Oroua Bridge, at Oroua Bridge, Mr Broughtonreferee. PERMISSION TO PE AY. Permission was granted Sandon juniors to play a match with Bulls juniors on Wednesday next; also to Porotawhao seniors to play Awahou seniors at Foxton next Saturday, the Union to take gate, money. INSURANCE. It was decided to make efforts to obtain the same use of Manawatu Insurance scheme as last year, with the proviso that all medical expenses entailed by subunion players in our own. matches be met by sub-union. THE CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER. Mrs Austin’s Presentation Banner is to be won two in succession, or three years at intervals. COEEY AND EASTON TROPHY. Tlio allocation of and Easton’? trophy is not yet decided, pending authorities fro a: the ■/ KEP. MATCHES. The Sub-Union decided, that rep matches which were to he held in view were :—Manawatu A Reps, at Foxton; Rangitikei reps at Sandon; Horowhenua Reps, at Levin. NOTES. We feel certain Foxton will feel proundofits 1906 footballers, as the play is likely to show a marked progress on last year. To support this theory, we may state Sandon claim to have a strong team, whilst among Porotawhao players are several Horowhenua players ( of last year. “ Tiny ” McNaeis doing battle for Sandon, together ; with some Rangitikei reps of last year. Awahou also claim to have Taranaki and Rangitikei players of last season in their ranks, so between the lot we should be able to boast of selecting, a first class rep team. Great interest was taken in the match, Oroua Bridge v. Awahou, at Foxton on Saturday. As a matter of fact very few of the latter turned up, and their ranks had to be filled by members of the Porotawhao team. The combined team defeated Oroua Bridge by 14 to 3. Much good play was witnessed, but only glimpses of back play was noticeable, which was hardly to be expected from a mixed combination. Mr D. Tatana refereed, whilst W. Robinson and a native held the touch flags. Mr J. Osboldstone has been appointed gatekeeper at Foxton for the season. By the way, a false impression seems to have gained ground that Awahou Club members’ tickets entitle holders to ad? mission. This is wrong, and it should be noted that the only tickets wich will admit free are players tickets, which are to be given captains of Clubs for distribution each Saturday, and are to be collected at the gate. Surely sixpence is not out of the way. We mention the fact to make the point clear. Awahou Club tickets are not issued by authority ot tbe Union, and such tickets concern the Club only, not the Union. We hope to see two good junior clubs formed in Foxton, so that good sport will be provided for Wednesday holiday-makers.
