The " Opotilii Guardian " announces on reliable authority that the Government is about to acquire a block of naive land of good quality in tha vicinity of Torere, consisting of 20,000 acres. This block has been voluntarily offered to the Government by the natives themselves. Mr Carroll promptly accepted the offer, and will take immediate steps to acquire the property for the Crown. The importance bf this transaction to Opotiki, remarks the “ Guardian," will at once be generally recognised. The Government has a block adjoining the one to be acquired further inland of about 15,000 acres, making 35,000 available for settlement. Magistrates are very particular about ss--uing prohibition orders on the application of persons who are not to be prohibited. Recently a Southern Magistrate asked the applicant if he was sure the person for whom a prohibition order was sought was injuring his health or wasting his substance. " Well," said the applicant, “ I don’t know so much about that, but he gets drunk and lies in the gutter all night, he’s pawned everything barring two chairs and a table, his wife has gone to live with her mother, neighbours have taken charge of the three children, he set fire to his stable last week, and the doctor says h - is consumptive. Of course, If you think he ain’t doing no harm, you can go on letting him have beer,’’ The Bench made the order.

The captain of the Salvation Army at Greyrnouth writes to the Grey River Argus as follows“ While on my visiting rounds during the Easter holidays amongst others I called to see an old couple who live some distance out of town.
