«—.— REBUILDING THE CITY. HOW MANY FATALITIES WERE CAUSED, .. PROVISIONS AT HIGH PRICES. New York, April 23. A conspicuous example of the steel framework in modern buildings for withstanding earthquake is the “ Call ” newspaper building, the tallest in the city. It contains every floor intact, though the interiors are greatly damaged. Business in connection with the rebuilding of the city is transacted there. Steel will be universally used in the reconstruction of the city, which starts to-day. The banks resumed business in tents on Wednesday. Many art treasures were destroyed by fire at San Francisco. They include Millet’s masterpiece —the painting entitled “ The Man with the Hoe,”—and the works of Rembrandt, Diaz and Murillo, which| were exhibited at the Bohemian Club.
