Meeting of Householders.
f ELECTION OF SCHOOE COMMITTEE. The largest meeting of householders ever held in Foxton took place in the schoolhouse last evening. About 250 people were present. Mr G. A. Simpson was voted to the chair. The Chairman’s report of the previous Committee was read at length, one passage which caused dissent being referred to in our leading columns. The full report will appear on Thursday. After dealing with the report, and passing same (with the passage referred to deleted by motion of the meeting) fourteen nominations were received for election on the new committee. Many others were nominated, including members of the fairer sex, but “I bag to decline! ” from the lips of the nominated silenced the pretensions of their nominators. Finally Mr Simpson (chairman) explained matters in connection with the meeting, and the polling commenced. Messrs Mat. Walker and Rev. Southern acted as scrutineers, and at the conclusion of the ballot, the reading was A. D. Clemett ... ... 95 F. W. Frankland ... 85 G. Gray 80 L. Wilson ... .- 73 C. L. Barnard 72 T; Betty 72 H. Austin 7 1 G. Coley Rev. Wilson 65 (All above are elected.) S. H. Baker 60 Rev. Speirs ... -• 54 A. Speirs ... ••• 53 W. Nye ... ... 47 Henderson 33
Messrs Austin, A, D. Clemett, L> Wilson, G. Coley, C. L. Barnard, F. W. Frankland, and T. Betty briefly returned thanks forelection. The Rev. Wilson, Messrs Barnard and Frankland made reference to the non-election of their late chairman, (Mr S. H. Baker). The Rev. Wilson contended that it was a disgrace to householders to have not .elected Mr Baker, and only those on the old committee knew his real worthin educational matters. Personally he would be quite willing to forsake his seat in favour of Mr Baker, but after an interchange of views by those present, it was found impossible. Mr Frankland also deplored the loss of Mr Baker on the committee who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his past years work. Mr Frankland also received a vote of thanks for his work as secretary. In replying Mr Frankland regretted very much that he could not fill the office the ensuing year, but when time permitted he would be only too glad to resume the duties.
Mr Baker, in thanking those who had voted tor him, stated it would always be his aim to work in unison with those who wished to advance education in our midst. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair concluded proceedings. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee, Mr A. D. Clemett was elected chairman, and Rev. Wilson secretary, pro tern.
