Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1906. VESUVIUS.
Oue cables tell ns that Vesuvius is in eruption, and that great devastation is caused thereby. Round Vesuvius are many villages and towns, and these and their occupants seem to be all suffering destruction. So far as is known the first eruption in the vicinity took place in 79 A. D.. and that outbreak practically destroyed the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and others. From that time onward, disturbances of Vesuvius have been frequent, except between the years 1500 and 1631, when the mountain was quiet. In the latter years, probably the most terrific explosion known of Vesuivus took place. Stone c were projected a considerable distance, and lava streams were potired upon the villages which nestled at the base of the mountain. It would seem that the present disturbance- promises to even surpass all its predecessors in damage, but were trust such will not be, and that it may turn out the cables reports we read of prove to be greatly exaggerated.
