Rome, April 11, Ottaiano was destroyed, The rain of sand continues.
The panic is terrible, and there is great destitution on all sides. King Emmanuel and Q”een Helena contributed f our thonsar.. sterling to the "-d'Af of the erers.
Further violent explosions have occurred and strong disturbances in the interior of the mountain.
Lava is again flowing towards Pompeii, and there is a downpour of ashes in the districts surrounding the volcano. King Edward sent King Emmanuel his deep sympathy. A total of five hundred perished at Ottaiano and San Guieseppe. The volcano is now active in the direction of Cercola;
Showers of sulphur fell at San Guieseppe, Vesuriani and Ottaiano, and a shower of reddish sand for several hours at Naples. In the evening the ashes were thickest at Torre Delereed and Torre Annuziata, and both are isolated.
Numbers, including British and German journalists, are unable to leave. A French squadron was sent to Naples to assist in the rescue of them and the sufferers. The fugitives number 12,000.
VILLAGES ENGULFED. London, April 11. A terrible hurricane, accompanied by torrents of water and bowers of red hot stones, the size of eggs, compelled the abandonment of Terre-del-greio. Complete darkness enshrouds San Gennaro, where numerous natalities have occurred. The village of Sarno is buried in ashes. Most of the residents escaped.
