Foxton Literary and Debating Society.

The first ordinary meeting of the Society was held on Tuesday evening last. Mr W. S. Stewart occupied the chair. The whole of the evening was taken up in the discussion of the syllabus and proposed changes in the rules. Various amendments were proposed by Messrs F. W. Frankland, Herstou Frankland, E. Spelraan, W.. Barnard, L. Jenks, E. Hill and Rev. H. F. Wilson. At length after a warm debate the following resolutions were carried :
1. That during this session all business of the Society be dealt with before 8 o’clock; that the subject of the evening be taken at 8 p.m., and that lady or gentleman friends of members be admitted from 8 p.m. on every third evening; also that the public be admitted on evenings appointed by the committee.
2. That no subject shall be discussed either at the meetings of the Society or in the columns of the Society’s magazine, which shall be of a religious nature calculated, in the opinion of the Society, to cause pain to one or more of the members.
3. That the syllabus be referred back to the committee for some alterations decided upon at that meeting.
The meeting then adjourned at 10.15 P- m -
