Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly, meeting of the Foxton Borough Council, held at the Chambers last evening, was attended by—The Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq.) Crs G. Coley, 0. Austin, G. Gray, A. Shadbolt, G. Stiles, R. Moore, and Mr F. W, Frankland.

The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed.

REPORTS. The Pound-keeper reported 28 head of cattle, x 8 horses, and 64 sheep had been impounded for the month. The Inspector of Nuisances reported the Borough to be in a clean and sanitary state. The Overseer reported at length on works carried out during the month, and recommended the fol-lowing;—-“That all drains in the Borough be cleaned; that 100 yards of metal be put on Avenue Culvert, 30 yards on Park road, 25 yards on Russel street, 30 yards on Sandon road, and 15 yards on Union street. ”

The Treasurer reported that since last monthly meeting £65 6s id has been paid into the District Fund account, and that the balance stood that day at £471 16s id, made up as follows General, £126 is id; Library £57163 2d; Reserves, £162 12s rod ; Interest, £146 os 7d —all at credit; and Cemetery, £5 15s sd, at debit. The Treasurer explained that after the passing of accounts that evening, the general accounts would be overdrawn to the extent of £l4 16s Bd, and against that there is the amount outstand for Licensing expenses to date.

The reports were adopted, and accounts passed for payment.

CORRESPONDENCE,

From Andrews Manthel, electricians, submitting" estimates and details in connection with the lighting of the Borough.— ’ esolved, on the motion of Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Moore, That a special meeting of the Council be held on Wednesday, March 21st, to consider the matter.

From R. Gray, re approach bridge inlljohnston street.—Re-

solved, That in reply to Mr R. E* Gray’s application, the Council without admitting any liability, give Mr Gray sufficient timber from the old bridge in Main street to repair his bridge in Johnston street which was washed away. From residents in Gladstone street, asking that culvert be erected.—The request granted on the proposition of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley. From M. H. Walker, re the bad state of Heta streets.—Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Austin, That the letter be referred to the foreman with a vi«w of getting the same placed in a satisfactory state.—Carried.

Two letters were read from the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce on matters relating to the coming International Exhibition. —In reply to the letter asking for a grant of towards providing exhibition space, the Council, after considerable discussion, “showed that it was unlikely there would be any exhibitors from this district, and regretted that they could not see their way to contribute the sum asked for.” —The Council also resolved to receive the Chamber of Commerce deputation on Tuesday fortnight at 2 p.m. Other minor matters were dealt with. A DEPUTATION. Messrs W. Barber and D. .Purcell waited on the Council with a view to having z drain laid through Borough reserve in the vicinity of their property. Much discussion took place ou this matter, and eventually both a resolution and amendment were put before Councillors, the resolution being carried. Proposed by Cr Gray, and seconded by Cr Austin, That the request of Messrs Barber and Purcell for drain through Borough Reserve be granted, the work not to Exceed £lO, and to be carried out under the supervision of Mr Barber, and to the satisfaction cf the Borough Council. Should tte work exceed .£lO, Messrs Barber and Purcell to pay the balance. Carried.

The amendment, which was re* jected, read: That this Council contribute half the cost up to £io for the construction of the drain asked for by Messrs Barber and Purcell through the Borough Reserve, the work to be carried ou4j by Messrs Barber and Purcell tq the satisfaction of the Borough' Council. Cr Moore proposed and Cr Urankland seconded. The Council rose at about io p.m.
