Lionel Terry.

TRA NSFERRED TO A MENTAL HOSPITAL.

EVIDENCE OF INSANITY,

Christchurch, March 3

Lionel Terry, who gained notoriety throughout the Englishspeaking world as the sensational murderer of a Chinaman in Wellington last year, has been transferred from the Lyttelton gaol to the Sunnyside Mental Hospital. For some time, it is understood, he has been under the delusion that people, whether Chinamen or not, who were no longer of use to the world, should be put to death. He has expressed the opinion that there should be lethal chambers in which allegedly useless folk could quietly end their mortal existence. It was only a few days ago that Terry arrived in Lyttelton from Wellington gaol. He then appeared to be self contained, but’ it seems he soon gave evidence of the disposition which induced him to shoot the Chinamen. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., received notice from the gaol surgeon that Terry was insane, and the Magistrate, with Drs Upham and Newell examined the prisoner. The result of the investigation was that Mr Bishop issued a warrant for Terry’s removal to the Sunnyside Hospital for mental disease.
