House of Commons.
MEASURE TO PROVIDE FOR THE STARVING,
London, March 3. The Bill introduced into the House of Commons by Mr W. Wilson providing that a local education authority may provide meals for underfed children, and, if it thinks fit, any other children —recovering the cost of such meals from parents able to pay—was tead a second time in the House of Commons without division.
’ Mr Birrell (Minister for Education) and Mr John Burns (President of the Local Government Board) supported the measure, promising that after the bill bad passed the Select Committee stage time would be given to allow of it being passed this year.
Mr Harold Cox’s amendment declaring that to feed children would diminish parental responsibility was not seconded. He argued that it would next be necessary to supply boots and clothes, and barracks for children to live in.
“The Times,” in its commentary on the bill, says There is certain rough justice in the new demand, though probably it will end in supplying boots and clothes.
