Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1906. THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION.
The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce are to be commended for their endeavours to have the district thoroughly represented at the coming International Exhibition at Christchurch. We feel certain Foxton’s industry can be well represented, and it behoves our Chamber of Commerce, at its next meeting, to deal thoroughly with the subject, and, at least, see that representatives from this end are present at all meetings of the Palmerston Chamber on the subject, in the hope that Foxton will contribute largely to the proposed Manawatu District Exhibit. There is every possibility of the rope works turning out good material long before November, iu which case such product could be exhibited, together with our best samples of hemp, to the undoubted advantage of the district generally. It seems fair to imagine that representatives of market firms from all parts of the world will be present at the big show in the Cathedral City, and, if we intend to be alive at all, we better act. The following letter, received by ns from MrG. Hirsch, secretary of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, speaks for Itself :
“ Dear Sir, —This Chamber, together with the local Borough Council and the Manawatu A. and P. Association, has taken the initiative to have a special Court or Bay at the forthcoming Exhibition n.t Christchurch, for the purpose of mnkmqr a good display o f the Resource.;, Products, Manufactures, and Art Specimens, etc., of the dFtriet locally governed by the Feilding, Foxton, Marton, and Palmerston North Borough Councils : the Bulls, Halcombe, and Rongotea Town Boards ; and the Horowhenua, Kairanga, Kiwitea, Manawatu, Orona, Pohangina, and ißangitikei County Councils. Besides the members of these Local Bodies, Chambers of Commerce are invited to be represented at the meeting which is to discuss and decide how best to bring about the desired object.
By a combined exhibit it is sought—1. To economise expenditure. 2. To make a formidable display. 3. To have a District Exhibit competing with others of a like nature, the components of which will, nevertheless, compete in every individual class of exhibits throughout the Exhibition.
There are numerous other advantages to be gained by the proposed combination. These will, it is expected, be placed before the meeting in every possible aspect. The meeting is convened for Thursday, Bth March, at 2 P.ra., at the Borough Chambers, Palmerston North.
The time being rather short, I have been directed to advise members of Local Bodies direct, as well as the Chairmen and Secretaries, and to apologise for what may perhaps be deemed a breach of etiquette.
This circular has also been sent to individual firms and others, and every recipient will oblige by doing his utmost to give it publicity and further our common object.”
