Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1906. AS WE WERE! THE SAME YESTERDAY! TO-DAY! AND FOR EVER!
Such terms could not be more appropriately attached than to Foxton’s non - progressiveness. Time may come and time may go, ‘rat what care we ? We are living ind why disturb ourselves ? The fact remains that the summer nonths are on us, the turn of the calender when we observe everything at its best—when there is ‘ittle need for good street lights, or instance. Fortunately, nature has smiled upon us this summer, and we have not as yet felt the want of water for household use. Fortune has also beamed its luxuries upon us of late, for we 'ave had no fires whereupon the necessity of a Fire Water Service has been felt. But, will, it always be thus ? we ask. This is the ■-easou when improvements should be carried out, when the weather can be depended on, and why is not a decided move made in the direction of town improvements ? It is with a certain amount of glee we learn that a mere handful o r mr small capitalists are endeavourhig to establish a rope-works here, vherebyan increase in our population will be compulsory, and the ’.own itself progress as a result. But why don’t our leading citizens and civic authorities move for the r eneral advancement of the Borough ? We have said before, ind again repeat, that we want thorough’ efficient water and light ■•.chernes, and when it is for our own good why don’t we act, even a 1 though we may have to adopt a borrowing policy to carry out our projects. It may be that our most earnest and deserving townfolk ire becoming tired of trying to convince their less adventurous brethren that to materially improve the value of town property we must work conjointly and place valuable assets in the vicinity. Certainly, we have held enough meetings over the matter to have raised enough money to dig a canal from here to Palmerston North, but all to no purpose, for we have done nothing. Eet the leading lights of the Borough work more enthusiastically, and we may have the improvements asked for, and thus we will be on the advance.
