Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JANUARY 30. 1900. ONCE AGAIN! THE WANT OF J’s.P!
Yesterday morning we again had instanced to us the need Foxton has for more Justices ot the Peace, Two natives, who had charges preferred.against them, and who had been taken into custody on the Saturday night, were remanded until Thursday—owing to the want of J’s.P. There was only one to be obtained in the town, and it is high time the Justice Department looked fully into the matter and appointed a few worthy citizens to the post. It certainly is not justice to compel a person to wait five days before answering to a charge of, say, drunkenness, or maybe, less trivial. We have frequently urged the necessity of the appointment of more Justices of the Peace for Foxton, and we trust those responsible will listen to our pleadings and alter the existing order of things somewhat. It is not always convenient for the Mayor or Town Clerk to attend, and we wish the Department of Justice would note this fact, and by making further appointments, thus prevent a repetition of yesterday's occurrence, whereby accused persons have unnecessarily long delays before being given a chance to answer charges of law-breaking. May something be done in the matter, and that shortly!
