HIDDEN RIVER
A discovery of romantic literary interest has been made by Mr A. Angell in British East Africa. While, engaged in the survey of Take Naivasha and its caves he found the hitherto unknown outlet of this fresh-water lake into a large subterranean river. Take Naivasha lies about one hundred miles east of Take Victoria Nyanza, and is at an altitude of 6000 feet. >
Readers of Mr Rider Haggard’s story “Allan Quaterraain*” says the “Daily Mail.” will at once recognise the locality. Naivasha is the-lake with the marvellous caves which is described in' the chapters which narrate the hero’s olunge into the unknown in search for the mysterious white race? The gruesome incident by which the caves were discovered will he the natiye : ser« vant Wakwafi dived into the lake and was “sucked with frightful rapidity ” through the arch thftf gave entrance to the mysterious river, and how his corpse followed the canoe throughout its sublet* ranean passage.
“ Allan Quatermaiu ’’.was published sixteen years ago, and Iff Haggard then offered in romance the solution of the lake outlet which is now substantiated by fret.
