Foxton Racing Club.

THE ANNUAL MEETING;

President—F Robinson; Vice-Presi-dent, W E Barber; Treasurer, J F Overend; Timekeeper, C h Barnard; Judge, H Gillies; Hdo* dicapper, J E Henrys ; Clerk tf Scales, Jas Sytnois; Clerk || Course, C Peterson; • Starter, T Cameron; Stewards and C*ni| mittee, O Robinson, C Robinsor ( A Laing, G Gray, H Thynne, ’C Hunt and A Sbadbolt. Eom Surgeon—Dr Patterson,

Favoured with fair weather, it was only to be expected that the Foxton Racing Club’s 1906 meeting would be largely attended. These expectations were justly fulfilled, and it may be said that the attendance on Monday last was a record one. The many improvements made at the course were largely commented upon, acceptances for the meeting were good throughout, the racing exj citing, the finishes close, and speculation brisk. After the Trial Hack the first day, the official starter (Mr T. Cameron) complained of indisposition, and the Club secretary (Mr Angus Keith) was called upon to make the despatches, which he executed in first-class style. Fortunately, the ex-secretary, Mr J. Whyte; happened to be in attendance, and considerable aided Mr Angus Keith in his duties, which were carried out in an admirable man* ner. All the Stewards worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering. The luncheon, which was of the best, was in the capable hands of the Langley Brothers, while the refreshment bars were presided over by Mr Wakeman, of Turakina. Both days the Foxton Borough Brass Band provided a programme of music which added. considerable to the enjoyment of the meeting. The judge, Mr Hugh Gillies, had some close finishes to decide, which paidOß great tribute to the Club handicapper, Mr J. E. Henry’s. In the Carnarvon Hack Welter on the second day Federation evidently crossed its legs just after passing the post, and fell, bringing down Fahey, its rider, a nasty bump. He was piched up unconscious and carried to the press room where he regained consciousness just prior to being conveyed to the Palmerston North Hospital by train, where he is now located. We learn that he is likely to recover speedily. Bourrasque, the winner of the Foxton Cup, is trained by the same trainer as last year’s winner (Rapids), who received Mr Alf. Shearsby’s mentorship. The stewards are to be complimented on the distinct success which attended their efforts to popularise the property as a racing resort. The fact that the Club had spent over on improvements during the past year was in itself enough inducement to draw the record crowd, and when we observe Club’s in- > creasing stakes, and improving racing reserves in a like manner, we can conscientiously recommend them to the Racing Club for future permits. We certainly think the Foxton Racing Club have a just claim to an extra permit yearly, and trust that the Racing Conference will consider such claim when they meet in August next.

On the first day .£9,044 was put through the machines, and on the second £7,343, making a total for the two days of £16,387, as compared with £13,614 last year, or an increase of £2773.
