Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1906 WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
•Ve have always understood that v r hen a person dies destitute of neans, the cost of funeral obsequies should be borne by charitable aid, but a recent case has come under mr notice which disproves that contention. The case in question happened not long since in our own district. The undertaker was instructed by the Police that if his account was forwarded to the Charitable Aid authorities, it would probably receive attention. The Police in the meantime had a converse with our representative •"Mr Alt. Fraser), who stated that he would place the matter before the Charitable Aid Board, the Palmerston. North Charitable body, when questioned on the matter, pointedly refused all liability, and the question now arises ; ‘ ‘ Who is responsible in such cases ?’ ’ The Police have no separate fund to meet such liabilities, and we ask whether the State provides for such expenditure. Surely, we have not reached such a state of pauperism. Someone will have to meet this account, if only to protect our charity.
