Abridged Items. London, Jan. 17. Obituary.—Marshall Field, of Chicago, whose estate is estimated to be worth fifteen million sterling. Georges has confessed to stunning M. Durel, Marazo stabbing him with a dagger. [M. Durel, a French architect at Geneva, was murdered in a tunnell near Virien Le Grand. The body was robbed of fourteen thousand in securities. Two youths, Marzo and Georges were arrested on suspicion.] New York, Jan. 17. The chief engineer of the Panama Canal has informed the interOceanic Canals Committee that American labour cannot dig the canal. He considers it best to employ Chinese labour. Tokio, January 17, Marquis Ito has strongly censures Baron Komura for not obtaining from China a public acknowledgement of Japan’s recovery of Manchuria from Russia. London, Jan. 18.
A London syndicate has secured eight thousand shares in the company formed to promote the building of a patent balance nonvibrating engine, invented by Mr Werry, of Bendigo. The Thames’ Ship-building Coy. are building an engine capable of driving a torpedo boat for demonstrative purposes.
The Duchess of Connaught was robbed of worth ofjewellery. New York, jan. 18.
Since the rupture with France the chief officials of the French Cable Co. have been expelled from Venezuela. M. Taigny, French Charge d’ Affairs at Caracas, boarded the French cruiser from Martinique to obtain despatches without the usual permit. President Cestre forbade him to re-land thougg the cruiser touched at several ports.
