Our Brass Band.
THE PLAY-OUT AFFAIR,,
iO THU EDITOR OP THE UANAWATO nstuie,
Sir,— On wading yeur paper •( Thursday last I was quite surpriidd to see the bad way ia which our local 1 entertainers have been treated at tho band? of the local Band. Surely they do not expect the sympathy and support of the public if they cannot glvt a little of their time gratis to a youag striving troupe who do not consider time or expense when they asked to provide an entertainment tor any good cause ; if that is goin g to be their “ motto,” I think they will fare vory badly at the hands of the public, and the sooner they change their tsietics the better for them. Greater also was my surprise on heiring that the troupe had originated in the first place w giving the Band a benefit, ia whim they were able to turn over to thfUTa goodly sum as profit, which in it? elf ought to have brought them fmwafd offering their services with»kis ~be;ng asked. lam surt it could not have been the sentiments of the whole hand; if so, I fear for their future. In coo* elusion, I would like to give them a text which they ought to have nailed nn the wall of the practice room. I think they could procure it at Mr Fraser’s: “Do unto others, ai you would like others to do unto you.’*. Thanking you for space, I am, etc., Charity. , S TO THB EDITOR OF TIE MANAWATU ITEBVtiD, • l| Sir, — It may appear to some a trivial matter, but certainly it appears tome one in which our local Band showed very bad spirit. I refer to their refusal to play out for the local entertainers. As one of thos« who have assisted the Band, I feel displeased to think that our musical institution should have taken the stand they did in the matter. The reward the entertainers have received for pros viding an entertainment for the Band will not be relished _by the?* Party, though, as a citizen,, I can truly side with them, and deplore the action of the Band, wh >se spirit is not sup. oorted by the majority of the townspeople, who are really depended uptn ' 'or the upkeep of our good hearted brass baud musicians. I did bear/' rumoured that the local entertainersintend going into comedy next winter, and that thev intended giving tbe proceed?! of their fust comedy pro* ri»dact'oir towards the support of Band’s fund. However true this * have been, the treatment received by the Patty will justify th. m in devoting their services towards another institu* tion. I would suggest either the Hospital or Volunteer Cadets. Trusting that the Band may see the folly of their ways, and that they wi 1 ! «n* deavour to ensure public support by acting differently, I will close. Thank, ingyou for space, I am, etc., ; The Voice of the Peopl«.
(ro editor of manawatu herald.) Sir,---I have been asked to e*|ire-t the opinion of the Entertainers re tha action of the Band in refusing their services to us. Truthfully speaking' we have no real occasion to vouchsafe an opinion, as actions always speak fonder (ban words! We were tormod , with the idea of aiding local objects' and also desirous of providing pleasing entertainments. Needless to Say, it has meant time and expense to every performer, who have given same wil* lin,'ly. Seeing (h »t most of our party had assisted at the Band naturally expected they would playjm for us on our conditions. However, it was not to be, and we leave vpfitn ; imagine our feelings—not oL-flbwill, but of sheer disgust, Speaking ps* , «- sonrl v, I would be sorry to record the fact that our Borough Band waa dc« funct. Such, a musical should h’ fostered bjrevery and I trust the Band will in f«i>, act with more tact, and learn to their own interests better by trent- , j other similar organisations to * "f }-M selves with more courtesy—at' events in a more humane spirit, I a,»■;! etc., E. G. SUTHERLAND' (Fog Entertainers).
