Several stories are told o;t the late Sir Henry Irving of course. Not a bad one is this that appears ia a late London paper The great actor was once playing Shylock and one evening by accident he paid his cabman too little—instead of too much as he invariably did. Cabby knew his mark and accepted the short fare observing with considerable humour: “ Look ’ere now, Sir Enry ! If yer plays the Jew, hinside that there theayter as well as yer plays it heutside—blow’d if I don’t come in an 'ear yer."
