Aquatic Sports.
The aquatic outing organised by the Manawatu Rowing Club drew a large crowd to the banks of the river in the vicinity of the Rowing Club’s shed yesterday afternoon, and, although slight showers of rain fell at intervals, still the sport provided was enjoyable. Mr E. Hill, the energetic secretary, had a busy time attending to all things, and seemed to get little help from the other members of the committee, many of whom failed to put in an appearance. At the commencement, events seemed to lag somewhat, but as the day wore on, a better system seemed to prevail. Certainly to Mr Hill alone is due the whole success of the affair. Mr Oily Austin was on the river with his oil-launch, and gave the children a great treat, which they are likely to remember with, feelings of joy. His launch, laden with children, together with the club’s outriggers, boats, and tubs, and fishermen’s boats, took part in the opening procession, and then the fun commenced. There were plenty of boating events, also a swimming event, and a barrel race, the latter providing plenty of amusement. More interest was taken in the ladies’ double-scull event than any item on the programme. and great was the joy of the spectators when the two youth* fill outsiders (Misses Adeline Collins and Morea Alzdorf) snatched victory from the Misses Collins and the Misses Eaing in the last few lengths. It was a popular win, as it would have been had either of the other crews won,—for was not it a struggle of the fair sex. There was not more than a length difference between the three crews at the finish. Another pleasing item on the day’s programme was the afternoon tea provided by the Rowing Club, and many were the expressions of eulogy for the Club’s thoughtful* ness. We were sorry to notice the Band were not present on the beach rendering selections, but perhaps they may be induced to be present at the next function of this kind. Those who assisted the Rowing Club in a measure were Messrs J. Frew, O. and H. Austin, W. Edwards, S. Hickson, G. A. Simpson, W. Howan and numerous others. ,The captain of the Club was unavoidably absent through being indisposed. Results:— Single sculls (tubs). —First heat: J. Marsh i; F. Ball 2. F. Howie a bye. Final: F.
