Raising a British Warship.
RUSSIAN HOPES OF RECOVERING ,£600,000.
Intense interest has been aroused at Sebastopol by the arrival of several salvage experts armed with Government authority to undertake the task of raising from the bottom of Balaclava Bay a large British man-of-war sunk by Russian gun-fire from the land batteries during the Crimean wax. Several attempts have already been made t } raise this vessel in the past, but, owing to the inadequacy of the salvage appliances used, without success. ' 1
The Russian Admiralty are stated to possess trustworthy information to the effect that the sunken man-of-war contains a large sum of money in gold originally destined for the payment of the British forces operating iu the vicinity half a century ago. The present attempt is to be carried out under the supervision of a well-known specialist in salvage, Signor Restucci, an Italian. Hopes are entertained that this time the operations will be crowned with success.
The amount of gold and other valuables in the yessel is variously stated to amount to from a quarter of a million sterling to over ,£600,ooo! Signor Restucci is stated to have undertaken the work on the principle “no find, no pay.” Should he succeed, it is understood that he will receive a handsome allotment out of the gold and valuables recovered.
