Vile v Seddon.
Prom the Manawatu Standard, we take the following:—The following letter has been sent to the Premier • To Hon. R. J. Seddon, Sir, —I. demand from you a full apology for words spoken by yourself in your recent speech at Shannon, as reported in the New Zealand Times of Saturday. You are reported to have said that you “ did not hesitate to denounce Mr Yile as a hypocrite of the first water.”
You must have known that the words you referred to as having been spoken by myself were constructed by your salf (when you made the foregoing defamatory statement) into a different meaning than that which they wore intended by me, and your evident inlention was to defame me before the electors of Manawatu and the whole colony for reasons best known to yourself.—Yours faithfully, Job Vile, Pukenui, Bulls, November 30kh. Clause 150 of the Electoral Act reads —“ Every person who, at any time between the issue of the writ and the close of the poll published or exposes, or causes to be published or exposed, to public view, any document or writing or printed matter containing any untrue statement defamatory of any candidate and calculated to influence the vote of any elector, is liable to a fine not exceeding .£SO, or to imprisonment for any period not exceeding three months.
i We understand that Mr Vile is also dealing with the paper which published the statement.
