Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1905. LIONEL TERRY.

General satisfaction is expressed at the recommendation of Cabinet to the Governor to commute the death sentence of Lionel Terry to that of imprisonment for life. The Governor has not sanctioned this recommendation yet, but such a course is most likely, in which case Terry’s sanity will be seriously tested, and if it is found that he is mentally affected beyond doubt, the probabilities are that he will be removed to an asylum, and then liberated in due course, if he shows distinct signs of overcoming his malady. It must be remembered that the action of the Cabinet, in making a recommendation in favour of Terry’s life, does not denote that it is right to murder aliens. A Chinaman’s life is, according to the law which governs us, of as much value as that of a European. It was only after tM most minute and careful examination of Terry and his antecedents that Terry was saved from the gallows, and those weak-minded individuals who are likely to imagine that it is lawful to shoot down Chinamen in cold blood are at,fault. May no more Such promising lives as that of Lionel Terry be blighted by fool-hardy actions !
