Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1905. THE RUSSIAN REVOLT.
Thk state of affairs in Russia have reached such a stage of barbarity that we may reasonably expect a big percentage of the unruly nation to meet death by wholesale massacre before the conclusion of the present crisis. War with other is bad "-Hough, but to even imagine fli&t a professedly civilized and Christian people are at warlike variance with themselves is more than heartrending. The Government of the country i-- known to be rotlen, to be almost without founda tion, and, if our cables are true, the people are quite justified in rebelling! The authorities seem to lie totally at a loss to conquer or g ivern the infuriated mob, while the latitude given to the troops is beyond all reason. We almost sympathise with the Czar, for he must be the most troubled monarch on the face of the earth. His is a miserable life, and will continue to be while his advisers keep to the present misrule of the country. It is heartily sickening to read daily of wholesale massacres, noting, lynching, and pillaging, and tbs breast of every Britisher must throb as he or she Jhinks of the hardships Russian humanity is subjected to. We notice Christian bodies throughout the world an* in sympathy with the people, and when those in power in Russia treat humanity as human, then will they raise themselves in the eyes and esteem of the world. We hope to soon record a cessation of the present unrest.
