Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY NOVEMBER 7, 1905. OUR BOROUGH NEEDS.

EcJxToS is In tieed of rriaiiy im provements, and there is. not a ratepayer in the Borough who does not know it, but the fear of being over-rated is the one stumbling block in the pith of our progression; At ksf Council meeting both the Inspector bf Nuisances and the Health Department wrote about the insanitary state of certain places in the Borough) and it will always be thus until we k&Ve d pfdpef sewerage system. What with the vrarm weather approaching, we will be in a nice pickle were some dire disease to gain a footing. To found S thoroughly up-to-date sewerage scheme will cost money, and what with water and light schemes, thousands can easily be disposed of in fitting up these requirements. The question arises “Would it be advantageous to raisd d IddU for thd purpose ?” We say emphatically Y£s! ! ’ 'There are those who will argue against this borrowing policy, but are we to stand still for ever, are we to remain stagnant and view smaller towns IddVd US behind in the race of cleanliness and dtiiy» Ji sCenis so! Talk! We have talked enough to supply London City with aii electric tram service, to supply the colony with electric power from Niagra Falls, blit we have not acted. Let us act! Our Council Was elected on the Progressive ticket, but We are sorry to say little progress has Come from their movements. There are those amongst our civic fathers who are of the moving spirit, but, alas, there are others! Certainly little help comes from the ratepayers, but the sooner one and all pull together in the interests of the Borough,, so much the better for the health of our citizens, and the welfare of the town generally. If needs be, let us borrow if it is to improve the value of our property, lessen our insurance rates, and safeguard ourselves from disease by carrying out suitable water and sewerage schemes to meet our requirements.
