Much has been heard of late years of the injustice meted out to railway employees in compelling them to work more than the statutory number of hours allowed other tradesmen. Ceftdiilly, it is pleasing to know that the hours of those connected with the colony’s locomotive department ho.y3 at last been, Icuitced, and ulkq that an increase of pay iu some brandies of the service will be granted;. The ■■ Railway Peparimeni b a u; editable I couccui, otherwise these improvements could not come about, and we may reasonably’expect further reductions in freights and fares as business increases. The reduction in hours must necessarily mean the employment of more labour, so it will be seihi fit h gladca that many of the applicants for positions in the service will receive appointments. The Government have made many improvements in the railway service of late years, both to employees lild public generally, and their latest move is certainly to be commended-.
