AUCKLAND, October 23. A Queen-street restauranteur named Peter Franchi was charged !at the Police Court with working three assistants for more than 52 hours weekly and failing to allow a weekly half holiday. The assistants deposed they worked seven days a week. The shopman said his hours in one week totalled xx6|. Two waitresses said they worked 96 hours, their wages being 12s and 8s respectively. Mr Dyer, S.M., characterised the case as “white slavery,” and fined Fraechi 30s on each of eleven information with costs, the total being nearly £3O.
