Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1905. TRAFALGAR DAY.
It is just 100 years ago that Lord Nelson and his colleagues won laurels at Trafalgar—*laurels which made Lord Nelson the most famous of all British Admirals. The marvellous victory then achieved has ever since been kept before the British schoolchild in history, and forcibly brought home by song and story. Therefore it 'is needless to deal at length with historical facts. Suffice it to say that on October 21 st, 1805, in command of 21 line of battleships Nelson met and defeated the combined fle&ts of France and Spain, consisting of some thirty-three line of _ battleships at Trafalgar Bay. EigMeeu of this number were either cam timed, burnt, &f sunk, Whilst the remainder were in flight, thus leaving the British commander the victor of the greatest naval battle ever credited to Britain; It is the centenary df this victorf the whole of the Empire is celebrating this present week. Throughout the Home land the festivities are being carried out on a large scale, whilst the colonies are doing their duty to the dead hero by marking the event in fitting style. The Education Boards throughout New Zealand have instructed headmasters to bring the doings of Nelyon before school-children in a strikng manner, and accordingly the latter are receiving object lessons. It was arranged that the Foxton School Cadets should at* tend battalion parade at Palmerston North yesterday and thus take part in the celebrations at that town, but owing to some misunderstanding, the lads were not present —a fact to be lamented. However, we hope Capt. Furrie will have his corps assembled on Saturday for the purpose named. For convenience sake, different towns in the colony are holding the celebrations on different days, and it is certainly pleasing to notice such deeds of glory and valour being thus honoured after 100 years duration.
