Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7,1905. THE FIRE PREVENTION SCHEME.
On Monday night the Foxton Borough Council will in all likelihood be called upon to define an area to cope with the scheme approved of by the meeting of ratepayers the other evening. Certainly will not allow for a large covering .of ground, and w.; doubt if little more than Main Street can be successfully worked into the scheme at the figure named. We should have preferred a more expensive and up-to-date proposal, whereby a larger portion of the Borough would have' received protection in case of fire. But we are not a progressive community, and therefore will have to be satisfied with the cheapest scheme possible. Whether that scheme will be a success and meet demands, is mere supposition. It has been argued that similar schemes have been worked successfully to advantage elsewhere, but we have our doubts whether it will be worked to effect in saving property in Foxton. However, it seems that something is to be done, and it behoves those directly interested to stir themselves somewhat, and watch eagerly every please of the question, and when a poll is taken may every vote be recorded in the best interests of the Borough generally.
