Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1905. A WATER SCHEME APPROVED OF.
The special meeting of ratepayers called for last night at the Public Hall was not very largely attended by ratepayers, who sdenl to Pvincd nd interest in matters concerning the welfare df the town. Three proposals were submitted by the Council for the approval of the meeting, viz., (i) the provision of a scheme to cost somewhere in the vicinity of £4OO, to pfeivide fdf flffi purchase of a manual engine and the erection of concrete tanks to hold water for the protectioa of Main street in a measure against fire ; (2) the purchase of a steam engine and laying df pipes over a tttiie circuit iti tile Borough, at a cost of £4000; and (3) the erection of new Council buildings, at a cost of £BOO. After much argument, the meeting finally decided to approve of Schemes Nos. 1 and 3i and the aanctidn for the loads fdf thieve works will accordingly be put to a poll ot ratepayers at an early date. The area embracing the fire prevention scheme is not yet defined, but will be discussed at the Council meeting mi Monday night U6xf, and it should he noted that Only those Within that area can vote brt the water-scheme proposal. All rdtepdvefs within the Borough have the right to vote oh thd proposal as to the Council Chambers Building. We hope to see unusual interest manifested by ratepayers generally in these important matters, and may the polling be heavy !
