De Ridder’s Main Topic.
IN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOB OP THE MANAWATU HERAXn, Sir,—l must again beg of you to accord me a little space to correct three misprints that occurred in my letter of Saturday, as the* materially alter what I had intended to say. I wrote that th* water from the present artesian well wac always running to waste, not as you waste, “ night and day, an s* is the reason why I suggested that extra amount of water should saved, by having a better pump, and diore continuous pumping than we haVtf/A' present. The next misprint was saying a “cavity performed," instead ot a “ cavity may have been formed ”; and the last was that you say “the hole made by the three-inch pipe lager,” but it was the two-inch pipe that waa to be drawn from inside the three-inch pipe; it was therefore the two inclr hole below the three-inch pipe that the water would naturally enlarge. Possibly many would not notice the difference. In fact I have been told by several people that most of the public do not give a second thought to any o i these local matters, as they are convinced by this time that nothing will over bo don® in Foxton, that is, I suppose, in the way expenditure that would increase In® rates; that may possibly be, as the councillors are ratepayers as well as the J®st u * » but when there is so little moipey w* the various necessitous requirements of the Borough, why not at once aao**' take some payable enterprise, such a# water, lighting, and electricity (as a power for flaxmills &o.), and by so doing assist to decrease the rates ? I should say the power for electricity could easily be got from the Manawatu Gorge, but that is for experts to say. I have also heard several say they would take shares in a gas company it started here, as they think it would pay, and I have no doubt it would ; but electricity is the most up-to-date, if it could be cheaply worked, and I believe it could. Trusting you will forgive my troubling you so often, —l am, ptc., F. He Ridde*. (You are euflroaehlng rather too much on our space. Not so often please, Mr De Kidder! You are covering the same ground all the time. A little variety may be welcome. — Ed. Manawatu Herald.”]
