Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30,1905. The Manawatu Election.
The political war indy be said to have commenced raging, sc) Ur as the Manawatu District is concern!d. The three candidates in the field are sure to make a good contest, and, judging by the feeling extant, we may expect heavy polling in November next. The Government candidate’s supporters seem to be particularly energetic and anxious to regain (he seat taken from them at last general election by Mr J. Vile, and are busy forming strong committees all over the electorate. This attitude must ar u e the feelingriof tbeir opponents, and we may shortly expect to see the Opposition and Independent parties on the qui vive. The battle may be said to have opened in- Foxton last evening, when the supporters of Mr John Stevens, the Government nominee, formed themselves into a committee to secure his return. The candidate delivered a short address, but preferred not to touch upon general politics, leaving that until a later date, when he intends to address the Foxton constituents at length. The formation of a committee was the main business, and judging by the enthusiastic and stirring utterances of some of those present, things will be warm political'y in the near future. No doubt we shall shoitly have to record the foimation of committees in favour of both Mr Vile and Mr Gardner, and may the struggle be fought out on just lines without undue bantering ? are our sentiments.
