Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1905. Railway Matters.
The deputation which journeyed to Wellington and waited on the Welling ton Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday last to gain its co-operation in endeavouring to place before the Govern ment tutr many mil Way wants j was cer tainly an Wlilßntlal and rbpfesentativi one. Needless to say, the main objec of the 'deputation was to further, as fa> as posyjHlej tile cdii.-trllctidil ftf the Levin-Eoxton line, arid tve iiluist con gratulato the Railway League’s representatives on the sound argument they brought to bear. That the route asked for would be a benefit, not only to the Maimwatii and districts, but to the whole of the Island, goes witlimv saying; but, the Council of the Chamber thought the time was not opportune yet for its construction. As the Council explained; the Government would not be likely to constrildfc shell litre until the Manawatu Line becomes the property of the State. The members of the Chamber who received the deputation were in sympathy with the object, and we hope that those delegates who journeyed to the Empire city to lay our claims before the Wellington Chamber wall shortly be rewarded with the knowledge that the initial step taken by them has borne forth fruit,--in short, that the Foxton-Levin railway is an accom p’ished fact. Such a line cannot fail to prove a benefit to Wellington as well as to the remainder of the North Island.
