Home cables announce the death id one of the greatest social work ra the world has ever known—Dr Thomas John Barnardo,' —who had attained the age of 60 years, and who had made a name throughout the world which will be hauded down to posterity as being the outcome of much good It was to the waifs and strays of Britain’s large cities that Dr Barnardo paid strict attention, with the result that he established paradises popularly known as “ Dr Barnardo’s Homes.” Deceased was born in Ireland, and educated in London, Edinburgh and Paris. While only at the age of 21 years his attention wa< directed to the condition of the homeless waifs, and he then set about to found the homes which have' made him so famous These' homes have been extended ever since, and all classes bav" been admitted, irrespective of nationality or creed. Nearly 60,000 people of all ages, from infancy to the threshold of adult life, have passed through the homes during the past 39 years. At present the homes comprise four mission branches and 140 distinct homes. Four of these are situated in Canada, one in Jersey, ninetynine in the English counties, and the remainder in Loudon. Indus trial training is imparted to the older boys and girls, who are taught a variety of trades to fit them for the battle oif life. An important adjunct of the work is an emigration agency, which has sent between 16,000 and 17,000 young persons abroad after they had been trained in the homes in trades and occupations such as would lit them to settle and prosper in new lands. Truly, Dr Barnardo’a name will long be cherished by countless thousands.
