Manawatu Election.
A wall-attended meeting of Mr Steven*’ supporters was held in the Druids’ Hall at Shannon last evening. Mr J. M. O'Connor was voted to the chair, and after explaining the object •f the meeting and introduced the subject of forming a committee to further the interests of the Liberal Sarty and its candidate, Mr John tevens. On the motion of Mr J. R. Btaosell, seconded by Mr Curran, it was unamiously resolved that ail present should form themselves into a committee. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr Stevens was then requested by the Chairman to address the committee, and on rising was well received. He gave a short address in which he pointed out the great good which had resulted from the legislation and administration of the present Government, instancing the recommendations of the British Com missioned Mr Reder Haggard, who was sent to Canada for the purpose of reporting upon the feasibility or otherwise of the British Government assisting General Booth in a scheme o{ immigration to that country. In his report Mr Haggard recommended the British Government to adopt the admirable system of land settlement and advances to settlers scheme which obtains in New Zealand. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a very successful meeting of Mr Stevens’ political supporters.
