Polar Exploration.
NEW LAND. The Duke of Orleans’s Greenland expedition discovered and mapped an unknov. n land, which it ii".iml Ter*edo 'France, between Cape Bismark and Independence Bay. The expedition, headed by the Duke of Orleans, only left a few months ago for the Po'ar regions. Just prior to its departure the Duke visited London, and made inquiries for a suitable vessel. An offer to purchase the Fram—Nansen's famous ship—was declined by the Norwegian Government, who regard it a* a national momento. Another ship was recommended to the Duke, however. and negotiations for its transfer were initiated. A well-known firm of London gunraakers overhaul d the outfit for the new Polar sh' , and the vessel is singularly up-to-' 1 Us in this respect. The Duke’s ambition is to beat the record of 88.38 deg. north latitude, which was reached by members of the expedition headed by the Duke of Abruzzi, who is a near relative of the Duke of Orleans. It was in the Stella Polave that, in 1900 the Duke of|Abrazzi penetrated furthest north—nineteen miles beyond the point reached by the Naim m expedition. “ The extensive and elaborate preparations that he is making show that the Duke of Orleans intends to spare neither time nor mousy in his efforts to malm a new Polar rtc >rd, “ said m intimate acquaintance of the Duke to a newspan"- r.mresentativo just before the vc-- 1 sailed. The voyage will extend over two or three winters The expedition is mainly scientific; but, unquestionably one of the Duke’s aims is to get a litthjjo*jl|(A to the Pole than anyone else.
