Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 1905. DETENTION OF SHIPPING.
Yesterday im> steamers and o. .sailing vessel were in the river. The Osteen of the South, with coal from Greymouth, got up to the \Vharf on the morning tide, and the other steamers, the Moa, Gertie ami Charles Edward from Westport and Putiki from Greymouth, all coal laden, were stopped at various points owing io the heavy fresh of Sunday having shifted the buoys and altered the channel. The scow Whangaroa came in and anchored down near the heads, awaiting a favourable opportunity to come up. The detention of all these vessels is one more argument that immediate steps are necessary to do something to put the river working on a better footing. Meantime the port of Foxton undeservedly suffers a good deal of prejudice at the hands of outside people owing to the neglect of the authorities who at present hav’fe control of its management but do not properly manage it. We trust that those interested will make this a strong point in urging the Government to action. If the department in whose hands the control of the port rests, cannot or will not conserve the interests of the large district whose trade is served by the river, then it is high time that the administration of the port was given to a local body which would make some effort to improve matters.
