The Colonial Treasurer brought 'down his Budget on Tuesday evening. Tire following are a few items of interest in the Estimates
The old-age pension total (including the additions) is £285,000, as against £*93,973 expended last year. Subsidies for manual and technical Instruction, £aooo, as against £920. Grants for National Scholarships, if 1650, as compared with £903 ex* pended last year. For the expenses of the general election, £*6,258 is allocated. Other amounts are as follow (the figures in parentheses indicating last year’s expenditure):— Grant for New Zealand Exhibition, £IOOO. Canadian steam service subsidy, £IOOO. South Africa steam service subsidy £22,500 (£35,000 expended last year), Noumea service, £IOO. The vote for post and telegraph salaries Is £350,749, an increase of £«S,*49 over last year's expenditure. San Francisco mail service £20,000 (£19,411). Suez mail service £ISOO (£3592). Vancouver mail service £450 (£447). Public schools £411,761 (£459.011). Secondary education £55,800 (£3l, 759). Technical instruction £22,005 (£l7, 301). School buildings, furniture and sites, £80,622 t£65,006). School capitation £67,781 (£65,625). Training colleges £BOOO (£5454)* District High Schools, £12.000 (£10,563). - Secondary schools and colleges, capitation, £15,000 (£13,015). Grant in aid of free kindergartens for infants under school age, f 500, Grants to University colleges for specialisation, January Ist, 1905, to March 31st, 1906.—Auckland Univer* oily College, commerce and mining (41300 per annum), £l*7s!
