Foxton-Levin Railway.
PROPOSED VISIT OF PARLIAMENTARY PARTY,
A meeting of the local committee to make arrangements for the proposed! visit of ihe Parliamentary party which is to inspect the Levin-Greatford route on July 31st was held last evening. There were present—Messrs Govvei (Mayor, in the chair), G» Coley, Simpson, Hennessy, Walker* and Moore.
The Chairman explained the object of the meeting, and Mr Simpson »aid the visit was the outcome of what occurred during the visit of a deputation to Wellington last session. The matler was of great importance fci; tb« public, who should be induced to:tak& an active interest in it. The suggest tion was to entertain the party at a smoke concert, at which details could oe discussed more fully. If the feeling was found favourable to the construction of the whole length of line they could go ahead with the effort, and if it was found that, owing to the antagonism of any section of the community, the completion of this length (Foxton to Greatford) only should be striven for, then they could act accordingly.
Mr Walks t asked what programme would be formulated.
Mr Simpson said he thought a set programme would not Its advisable, V “ free and easy” gathering would be more favourable to seeming expressions of opinion.
Mr Coley thought the people ware not showing the interest they should in the matter. He wished to know how much of the expense of the visit was going to fall on the committee. Mr Simpson said the committee was not taking any responsibility as to expenses except in so far as local entertainment was concerned.
Mr Hennessy agreed with Mr Coley that the lack of enthusiasm locally meant that the expense would - fall on a few. He was constantly hearing talk if non-progression and dead-and‘ aliveness in Fnxton, and when any move was made to push the place ahead people were slow in responding to*it. He moved, “That McKenzie be informed that this committee will fake charge of and entertain the Parliamentary party on arrival inFoxtotl,” This would limit the liability of the local people. The chairman seconded the motion, which was carried. A desulfory discussion followed on details. Mr Coley urged that the members should be taken round next day and their attention drawn to several * matters requiring improvement. Finally it was decided to communicate with Mr Vile, asking him to meet Hie committee on Monday next to decide on what should be done, and the meeting adjourned til] that day at noon.
Word was received from Mr Vile today that he would he in Foxton as desired on Monday. It now remains for the committee and as many citizens as can make it convenient to attend, to meet Mr Vile on arrival of the Sandon tram on Monday and talk matters over.
