FOOTBALL
FOXTON A (V)\ v. R (f.)« IV '‘ViVn. Sport." | ti'M rep. trial fixture at the racel Course yesterday atternoon was oi a “ free and easy ” nature. It certainly was not interesting to watch* there being too many infringementfei Which necessitated many scriims-. Ten of the picked A tfciun fdlled lijL film with the assistance o’tjo'e Jillett, Seia Scia, and Watty Symons, the 13 warriors commenced a battle against ,x 8 B’s under the leadership of Bob Newth. The R’s had many amongM Ibem who knew little of, the finer points of the game. Nevertheless they asserted their tights for future Foxton rep hniiours by spead-eagling themselves all over the field, which, in a measure stayed the attack of the A combination to such an extent that the galhe ended in a draw. All manners and colours of jerseys were oni fiVf the occasion, which complicated matters somewhat, : but NAi Gould must be given pride of place for best fancy dress, the genial sub-manager donning a white waistcoat for the purpose of singling himself out to the selectors-. Foe the A’s 1 Charlie Robinson scored both tries, neither of which. Wetc converted, whilst Left Vaider scoredja try for B and FVcd Robinson kicked a goal from a penalty. Charlie Robinson is improving fast, and may have scored a further try had Barker passed the ball out to him instead of hanging On. I had occasion to Censure Barker for this fault early in the season, but since then he has dropped it until yesterday. If you wish to make a successful attacking player throw the leather about, feed your wing three-quarters, and run more straight. Do not cut right across the 1 field, and thus pen your wings on the touch line. Tawhai handled the ball in a pleasing manner, but also baa a tendency to beat too many men, jimmy Dunn got few opportunities, whilst Geo. Robinson was out for sport. Desmond was a hard worker iu the forwards, whilst Jeffries, Scia Scia, and Reihana toiled. Syd, Wright and Hanna were prominent on the line-out, and Joe Jillet had a straight eye for throwing in the oval. For the B’s, Fred Robinson played a good game in the backs. Ken Furrie made a successful halt-back, and another to shine was Mick Cunningham who narrowly missed a potted goal after a splendid kick. Rore was noticeable. Of the forwards, Carter and Williams were best, with Newth Dunn and Whibley next. There were others with a sweat on. Mr Sutherland refereed, and Messrs Harper and De Ridder were in charge of the touchlines.
NOTES. Huia play Avvahou next Saturday, when Mr Frew will referee. Old Boys hold Hall practice tomorrow night. Both Barker and Hooker have been asked to attend a rep. trial match at Palmerston on Saturday. The Misses Coley have presented the Huia football team with a set ot handsome rosettes of the Club colours.
Mr “Octy ” Cook has kindly consented to fill in the sand hole on the football ground, whilst Mrs O. Cook is making ground flags for the Executive. Many thanks! Awabouteam for Saturday:—F., W., C., and G. Robinson, W. and J. Coley, Williams, Prestling, Williamson, Jitleft, Joe, Jeffrieb, Spiers, Broad, Carter. Erner Reid and Ashmore. On the School ground yesterday a match between Old Seiiool Boys and the School boys resulted in a win for the Old Boys, who played only ten against fifteen. The game was well fought out, and it was by good following up that Overend scored for the winners ; the try was not converted. The secretary of the Rangitikei Rugby Union wired this morning that a team could not be got together to travel to Sandon, and asking that the match be played at Bulls. The Foxton secretary wired that arrangements for Sandon could not be changed, and unless Rangitikei finally agree the match will be abandoned.
Mr “Snip” Allen, old time N.Z. Rep., and one of the best “ coaches ” in the colony, is schooling Avvahou for their next effort with Old Boys. Len Furrie has his team well in hand, and we may rightly expect to witness'the best club game ever witnessed in Foxton when the Simpson Cup is to be decided between these rival teams. Bravo, Foxtou football!
A point cropped up yesterday in the A and B match. The referee, Mr Sutherland, gave a free kick against Barker for illegally tackling, to wit, racing from behind an opponent and deliberately throwing his hand out, catching his opponent (Fred Robinsou) by the toe or shin, and sending him a “ pearler.” There is much diversion of opinion as to whether the ruling of the referee was right, ana the point will likely be discussed at the next meeting of the Manawatu Referee’s Association. Re the argument as to “ hack,” I may state that the explanation given by Webster as to “ hacking,” is to kick on the shins. HANKINS SHIELD POINTS.
In the above table, a forfeit is counted as a loss.
