At the usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council last evening there were present the Mayor (B. G. GovVef, Esq,), Cre Stiles. Frankland, Moore, rilitidboU, Nye, Gray, Coley and Baker. P. Edwards, Palmerston North, wrote that he would shortly be ( in a position to supply glazed dram pipes, BETA STREET, Mr M. H. Walker asked that a dayman be put on to clean out a drain. — Agreed to. BAKER STREET. Mrs A. Baker asked that something he done to mitigate a nuisance caused by a drain in this street getting blocked, up. On the Mayor’s motion it was de cided to put in slanting bars to act as a rubbish trap. RAILWAY TIME'TABLE, The Traffic Manager, Railway Department, wrote that under present conditions an alteration of the lime table would not be practicable. TARGET RESERVE. Mr W, Nye applied for a lease of a piece of swamp land near the Target Reserve. Mr Nye will be’ informed that the piece of ground mentioned is included in a reserve leased to Mi Brewer. RUSSELL STREET.
Mrs M. A. Speirs asked that the drain in this street be fenced off in places where cattle now trample it in. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. COMPENSATION. Mrs Mary Symons forwarded a claim for £250 for compensation on account of the closing of Gt ay, Street, Tin letter was referred to the borough solicitors. NOXIOUS WEEDS. The Noxious Weeds Inspector forwarded a notice to the Council to clerr noxious weeds from its roads and reserves. TRIAL PUMPING STATION SITE. The District Railway Engineer forwarded a plan of land at the windmill site and asked how much ground the Council would require in connection with (he pumping station asked for. Cr Baker thought the council should meet at an early date to discuss the* whole of the loan proposals. Cr Frankland asked if the department was like ly to grant the council the land free of cost. The Mayor said the rental would in all probability he a peppercorn one, which would be as good as having the land given to the council. It vvas decided that the whole council visit the site.
TRANSFER OF LEASE. A transfer of the lease of the Cemeterv Reserve fronTMr J. Hillary to Mr C. F. Johnston was agreed to. FIRE ENGINES. ■ , A communication from Messrs Mereweather, of London, including illus trated catalogue, was received and laid on the (able, CLEARING EUPINS. A motion by Crs Gray and Colev that the council have lupins cleared from the Montoa Estate frontage, drew from the Mayor the objection that when a similar action was taken las' year it applied only to cases in which lupins had been planted by borough employees. Cr C'dey said there were casrs where this was not s\ and (he Montoa Estate should be treated like the red. It would be a very hard matter t' prove that the lupins had come from Ijhe estate. Mr George Barber acted as spokesman and explained that' Ce erecfion of a creamery was projected in the neighbourhood, and the improvf - ment of the road would enable some n'' them to deliver milk. He and M Easton were prepared to con trihut £5 each towards the work. It was resolved that the Public Works Committee inspect the road with a view of making a recommendation.
REPORTS, Reports from various officers were read and adopted. ( THYNNE STREET. The Mayor drew .attention to the growth ot a large hole from which sand had been removed in (his street, an • the Town Clerk was authorised to take proceedings against anyone removing soil without permission. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £134 2s 4d were passed f >r payment. METAL. It was decided to order 100 yards o metal for repairs, the overseer to attend to the worst parts of various streets. DANGEROUS HOLE. Mrs C.Sullivan complained ofa dangerous hole at the entrance to hrr property faeimr the Avenue. Some councillors considered the hole had been caused hv the ocenpiers of the land, and thev should piv the roadway in proper order. It was also pointed out that rainwater caused a lot of the damage.
Mrs Sullivan will he instructed to fill in the rut caused by drays at the entrance to her property. The council rose at 9.35 p.m.
