OLD BOYS (6) v. HUIA (o)

By “True Sport.” The Simpson Cup match of Saturday ’ast attracted a large crowd of onlookers, the majority of whom extended fheix lungs to the utmost in barracking For 'the Maori team,—Huia, This team put a particularly strong fifteen in the field,—perhaps the best they have mustered throughout the season. But they lacked combination, the one predominant feature of their opponents’ play, and the result was Hhat Old Boys added another victory to their credit, and this without the aid of one of their reputed star backs, Wallace. Ken TAlrrie was also among the miisirig. The rulings of the referee did not meet 'wit h the approval of the public generally. Ha allowed players too much latitude altogether, and the remit w, as he bad little control over them. Certainly his convincing smile carried a lot of fityour with the players, who all look his rulings in good spirit. As events happened, Old Boys got decidedly the best of his decisions, which was their good fortune more than anything else. The exhibition of football was poor, being very uninteresting to watch. Apart from the fact that Mat Royal found the touch,•line with dock-work regularity, that Old Boys showed signs and that Bert, Shadbolt’s try v,i a , s the outcome of a pretty piece - 0 f passing, nothing of note ha^p ene{ f ( Tha scrums were all out oV gear, and it is to be hoped the raying public will be given more f or their money next Saturday, fhe Huia forwards played well individually, as did their hacks, but of collective work nullified thei||. e ff or t;s to score, Fred Shadbolt v Vas responsible for the first score, the tesult of a strong run on his part , hut bis nephew Bert, failed to increase the points. No further points were added when the whistle sounded half-time. Old Boys got one or two passing bouts going the second half, and ultimately Jimmy Dunn gained possession in mid-field, and sent the ball out to Barker, who in turn transferred to Bert. Shadbolt. Young Bert, just got there at the correct moment, a-rfgl in the twinkling of an eye, had grounded the ball safely over the Huia line. Bert, again failed at goal, and there was no further scora, the game ending In favour of Old Bays by six points to nil.

For the witomers, Marshall, Wright, Desmond, "Hooker and Lee worked well In, the forwards. Barker and the mainstay of the backs, both Guorgie Coley and Watty Bymons shaped well." Bert. Sbadbolt ■fayed one cif his best games, whilst Fred Shadbolt is fast coming back to form.

For Huia, Mat Royal was a host in himself, while Tawlhai did all he was asked to do. Rore and Kereama were the best of this other backs. Hanna, Potty, Bowe, and Reihana were always working hard in the forwards, and Shea Shea was noticeable at times.

Mir. Payne (Palmerston North) held the whistle, whilst Nat Gould and F. Robinson bad charge of the touchlines.

FOXTON REPS. v. MANAWATU B. The following learn has been chosen tb represent th« Fox ton section against a Manawatu Rap. team at Palmerston North to-morrow: Fulbback, Fred Robinson; three-quarters, J. Dunn, N. Barker (captain), and Kerearaa; five-eighth, T&whaihalf, Mat Royal; win j forwards,'W. Hooker and W. Robinson ; forwards, F. Spiers, Putty, Reihana, Hanna,.J. Joe, Jeffries, and S. Wright. Emergencies : C. Robinsonand Rore (backs); J. Desmond and J. Jillett (forwards). Neither Marshall, Wallace nor Meder wore able to make the trip, and could Hot be considered by the selectors.

A hail-practice was held last nighty when the reps., under the tuition of Ur Len Fume, showed good promise. Altogether, between thirty and forty footballers, stripped, which speaks volumes for the enthusiasm evinced in the Rugby art. The rep, hookers were set a hard task by Jimmy Desmond, and when the old horse secured the leather, great was the delight of bis side. In line- out work, the reps, received good tuition, which it is to be hoped theyjwil! pay heed to. The backs were quick at taking tq their task, and With our rearguard rest. the chances of success to-morrow. If they can gain possession, Manawatu may have to Contend with many passing bents. Several enthusiasts intend journeying to Palmerston to:morrow to witness the game. Manawatu will be represented by the following:—Hughes, Walsh, Lmv, Stfvens, Findlay, Boon, Hepburn, Armstrong, Adams, Ward, McNae, G. McMinn, Deßlois, Caldwell, and Bateman.' The team is a good one, particularly the forwards. Included ’in them is* Lofty Armstrong, the six-foot wing forward who toured Australia in 1903. Besides, there is an exWanganui rep. and six ex-Manawatn s«ps in the combination. Still, if Ihe Foxton team play up to their best form, and hook the ball out to their backs, the game should prove very Interesting.

NOTES. The name of Shadbolt ts becoming famous in Fbxton football this year. Frank, Fred, and Bert, of that ilk have done practically all the try-getting in the last 'three victories credited to tb« Old Boys. Old Boys now have a lead of one point for the. Simpson Cup, bul: Awahou a,ver they will change the order of things next Saturday. The game should prove to be the most Interesting of the season. •A%9«gH the gates bn Saturday last, thdt-sumr. dill not repr^fjm^ie frowjlg)rasfcnti There dre'those' who prefer dQitVftlfe mile and scale the fence sooner than meat the gatekeeper with the necessary nita,.

defaulters would do well to breast the gate-keeper in future, and thus redeem their good name. Surely the sport is worth the. contribution asked for!

The Old Boys hold practice in the Hall on Thursday night; The Executive have been presented with handsome touch-line flags,; for their rep. games by a lady admirer of the sport, for which they return hearty thanks. The New Zealanders defeated Auckland at the latter place bynine/pdints to three./Hunter, Smith, .and ‘McGregor scored for the Colonials, and W. Tyler for Auckland, Thompson retired hurt.

The Institute-Old Boys game at Palmerston on Saturday last was won by the latter by 18 to 5. Both Stalker and Archie McMinn, of the Institute team, retired hurt.

Mr E. Ball is presenting a trophy to both Awahou and Old Boys Clubs over next Saturday’s game. These will be presented at the dinner, probably.to the best all round player on each side. An effort is being made to get Rev. Harper to referee in the match.

The-crowd'at the racecourse' on Saturday were inclined to be riotous. However, the happy countenance-of the referee was responsible for much good humour, and fortunately the game ended without mishap. Still, the public would do well to keep the lines; clear.
