REPORT OF A RUSSIAN LAND VICTORY. WORK AT SEA- " London, General Mistchenko, the leader, after a four days’ reconnaissance* on the Japanese flank, retired on Mon--" day twenty miles to the north-west. The Russians in Batan Straits stopped the Norwegian steamer Oscar bound to Nagasaki on the igth. The fleet consisted of fourteen converted cruisers and six destroyers. It is officially stated from Luzon, one of the Philippines, that fifty war ships, supposed to be Russians, passed eastwards of Batan Islands on,the aoth* sailing north-eastwards.
Tokio messages indicate that many Japanese warships are watching th* Tsushima, Tsugaru, and Soya straits. French advices from St. Petersburg indicate that Marshal Oyama has been immensely reinforced. Advices from St. Petersburg are to the effect that General -Rennenkampf severely defeated the Japanese, attacking an unnamed position. Several hundred casualties are reported but details have been censored. General Linevitch demands the recall of General Kuropatkin,
