The Marshall Islands.
1 AUSTRALIAN- TRADE THREATENED. London, May 4. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says that after April, 1906, the authorities of the German Solomal Office will administer the Marshall Islands, collecting the taxes and Customs—instead of the German Company at that group acting as governors and traders, as at pre*» sent. : “ The Times ” expresses the fear that the North German Lloyd’s new 'outh Sea service is likely to outweigh any advantages accruing to Australian shipping by direct Government administration. Germans consider the new arrangement will completely paralyse the Australian snipping trade in the South •'eas. It is reported at Berlin that the Sydney-press recognises the legality and masterly character of this example of German enterprise, Sydney, May 4. A section of the Sydney press regards as a shrewd business coup the action of the North German Lloyd's Company in inducing planters in New Guinea and New Britain to enter into a five-years’ agreement to ship their products by that company’s steamers to Australia. The “ Herald ” considers the local company which has been trading in tiie South Seas (Burns, Philip and Co.) has been outmanoeuvred, which is not to be wondered at considering how it was handicapped by the heavily-subsidised German company’
