A DOUBTFUL MOVE.
At last night's meeting of the Borough Council applications were considered for the position of borough overseer, and the result was an appointment which cannot be said to be in consonance with the “progressive” spirit said fto be infecting the members sleeted to the new council. Several applications were received, and from these two or three were selected from which the final appointment should be made, and eventually a man—a local resident, by the way—was chosen who had admittedly failed on a former occasion to give satisfaction. No discredit is cast on his workmanship ; but an overseer requires some qualifications beyond mere strength of bone and muscle. An overseer should be able to direct the operations of those
under his charge so that the best result is obtained from their labour—-in a vord he should have some capacity for ’n’rinisntion, even- in such minor matters as the conduct of borough -orks—and in this the new appointee >as already failedj to qualify. His ;nlectionj therefore in fdce of the excellent testimonials submitted by tftnef applicants, men with an evident wldfir xperience, seems rather inexplicable, nd to savour more of retrogression ‘han progression. We do not know he neW overseer* and are not actuated ry any personal tHdiiVSS In thus deprecating his appointmentsß are -imply speaking in the interest ot the mrgesses. Can those who voted in ivour of his appointment last evenug say the same ? We may only hope hat subsequent event* will prove that hey were acting for the best.
