CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

Business men and citizens generally of Foxton are invited by advertisement in another column to attend a meeting convened for Thursday evening next, when a proposal to establish a Chamber of Commerce in this town will be discussed. We have already drawn attention to the necessity which exists here tor the services of such ' an institution, whose scope of action may be much more elastic than that of a local governing body, such as the Borough Council, which is the onlyorganised representative body in the town at present. Membership is not restricted, and it is open to any member to draw attention to matters requiring improvement. We shall hope to see a real “live” chamber inaugurated, whose aim will be to work for the advancement of Foxton's commercial and general welfare. There is no limit to the possible sphere of its activities, and it is well known—so well known, indeed, that the fact should hardly need recapitulation—that persistent and well organised efforts must in the -end accomplish good where spasmodic outbursts of popular incitement fail. It is therefore earnestly to be hoped that business men may rise to the occasion now, and that the embryo chamber may in the future achieve success and benefit to the town and district.
